MAKAN MAKAN IN LANGKAWI

Artisans Pizza – Pantai Cenang

A small pizza restaurant along the Cenang Beach painted red and decorated, complete with large lettering delivery phone numbers, like any other pizza outlet. We ordered Hungarian goulash, fish & chips and 4 cheezy pizza. Goulash comes with mashed potato, bread & beef stew and is a main dish by itself. The 4 cheezy pizza is simply out of this world for those who love cheese pizza. The generous topping with 4 different types of cheese blend well together. The texture is just right, not too runny and not overcooked & dry, just perfectly gluey to sink your teeth into…yum. The pizza is so good that we make a special detour for an early dinner on the way to the airport on the last day.

Oriental Restaurant – Pantai Cenang

A trendy and chic restaurant along the Cenang Beach. The simple rectangular white building has high ceiling and decorated with teak furniture, art pieces, water features, beautiful landscape and complete with subtle lighting. 5 stars for the deco and ambience. Perfect setting for loving couples. The menu offered is mainly Thai orientated. Nice presentation with the dishes but extremely small servings and pricey. Not a place to go if you have big appetite and a limited budget for food.

Breakfact Place – Pantai Cenang

Relaxing and friendly Kampung style eatery. Very informal. You can walk in from the sea with water dripping from your shorts or bikini and not feel out of place. Serves tasty toastie cheese sandwiches.

The Loaf – Pantai Kok

Mahathir’s roti shop fronting a marina at Pantai Kok. Nice location, clean fresh outlet. No other customers when we were there around 1.00 p.m. Decided to “tah pau” some pastries instead. Variety of bread, pastries and cakes displayed nothing to shout about and rather pricey esp. the drinks. A cup of kopi cost something like RM10.

Barn Thai – middle of mangrove jungle

Built more that 10 years ago, located in the middle of no where and about 20 minutes drive from Kuah town. A 400 m long plank walkway from the car park leads through the mangrove swamp to the restaurant. The alternative approach is by boat along the river to the small jetty at the back of the restaurant. There had been plenty of rave reviews by architecture magazine, newspapers and food critics and accompanying awards in its hey days. However, with so many new restaurants sprouting up all over the island, the most talked about restaurant in the 90s has become somewhat passé. The lunch/dinner package tie up with mangrove tours might be its saving grace. The Thai food served was actually fairly good and price comparable to that in KL.
