DAMAI LAUT
The 3 days 2 night long Diwali weekend was spent in Damai Laut. The drive up along the coastal road took about 4 hours including a wrong turn towards Bagan Datuk instead of Teluk Intan. It must have been at least 10 years the last time we travelled up this route. Small towns and villages and scenery that had somewhat faded from memory slowly became familiar again. It was almost a nostalgic journey.
Reached Sitiawan town around 1:30P.M. The wife was craving for a bowl of rice wine mien sein. Enquires with the few locals drew a blank. They claimed there is no stall selling the item. The sun was blazing and we were hot, tired and hungry so we did not persist and settled for some normal fare at the corner Kopitiam.
The resort is located some 10km off the old trunk road leading to Pantai Remis and Taiping. The location is superb. Isolated, hidden away in the middle of no where and nestled by the sea with its own stretch of sandy beach and complete with its own 18 holes golf course. The main open hotel lobby overlooks an infiniti swimming pool and across the sea to Pangkor Island further beyond.

The package holiday included daily breakfast, boat ride to Pangkor and free use of non-motorised sports. Paddling the kayak with ML was fun. Also tried my hand in archery. Being a novice I was pleasantly surprised that I could hit 2 bull eyes in a quiver of 10 arrows. Talk about natural talent…….The speed boat ride to Pangkor was exhilarating with wind blowing into your face and hair, and it took only about 15-20 minutes compared to the slow passenger ferrys that ply from Lumut. Lunch at the stalls located right on the beach under huge shady trees was simply idyllic. The food tasted good and it was surprisingly very cheap by today’s inflated prices.
The sunset at Damai Laut on that day was simply awesome. I have not seen such a beautiful sunset for a very long time. The place would have been an ideal get-away holiday location except for one most irritating setback – an abundance of house flies in every corner of the resort including the golf course, the beach, the restaurant and even in the room if you leave the terrace door open.
