A NEW POLITICAL ERA

The tumultuous political storm that swept through Peninsula Malaysia on 8 March 2008 took everyone by surprise. The rumblings and undercurrents of discontentment had built up over the years. All the tell tale signs were there but no one has foreseen the devastating scale of the eruption. And then on Election Day, the voice of the Peoples’ Power came through overwhelmingly loud and clear through the ballot boxes. The Rakyat has finally awakened after 50 long years of political deceits and abuse to usher in a new exciting political era.

It was unfortunate that our brethren in East Malaysia were still in their slumber. It was through their massive block of 54 seats that allowed BN to survive by the skin of their teeth. Nevertheless, 5 States fell to Barisan Rakyat. The election result could actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise. An over night change after 50 long years of a one government system might be too sudden and difficult for the people to digest. A 2-stage transition on the other hand could be the ideal tonic.

Over the next 5 years there will be 5 model States governed by a different combination of 3 political parties. With keen competition from within and without, each party has to perform well to earn the trust and support of the people. In this political game there will be no second chance if they do not perform. However, if they are able to deliver on their election promises to the Rakyat there will be no doubt as to who would form the next government at the 13th General Election.

A new political era has dawned in Malaysia. Despite the censorship and spins put up by the government controlled mass media, people could no longer be misled or hood winked. News of the mother of all ceramahs that rocked Penang with a crowd of 60,000 easily reached all corners of the earth through a click of the mouse in cyber space. The end is near. The arrogant BN together with its racial politics of divide & rule will be dumped and confined to the trash can of Malaysian history. To day I am proud to say Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia.
